The Season For Christmas Lights

by Jane Moore on December 11, 2009

The season of Christmas lights is upon us. Streets and homes and entire communities feel festive and joyful. Families are searching for their Christmas decorations. As each year passes the Christmas decorations become more cherished. That is, except for one. Older Christmas lights are being replaced as fast as you can say “Jack Frost”. Out with the old and in with the new is the Christmas lighting exception to the old rule.

On the surface, it would appear that Christmas decorations never change. If you scratch beneath the surface you will find that many, many changes have been made with respect to Christmas lighting. The common Christmas light has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Despite the changes, the appearance has not changed much.

Historically, each string of Christmas lights had individual bulbs. At one time these lights were wired in such a fashion that if one bulbs went out the entire string would fail to illuminate. As could be expected that was not a very efficient system. In individual bulbs were expensive and constantly needed to be replaced. The strings of lights were heavy and cumbersome to put up.

The technology related to lighting has advanced considerably and accordingly so have Christmas lights. Most modern Christmas lights are made of tiny LED lights. These lights are tiny, light weight, (recently) inexpensive, and very energy efficient. In fact, a recent study out of Germany and reported in the New York Times claims these lights are five times more energy efficient than their predecessors.

Small LED lights are also great for creating focal pieces such as light balls and light stars. These focal pieces are starting to get very popular. At one time they were very expensive but now they can be found reasonably priced at Ikea.

Indeed, it is the time for Christmas lights. Our homes and communities will be decorated as they have been decorated for centuries. Everything might look the same. However, with new technology Christmas lights have changed for the better.
